SR2 definitely experiences a LOT of this.Įither way, I'd rather replay the entirety of the SR series over the GTA series, just sayin'.Ok, so i was struggling on this one, following the other solutions.
On the other hand, it's been a LONG time since the 360 era and a lot of games (including the SR series) have long since taken a lot of the stuff done in those kinds of open world games and really just ironed out the wrinkles and otherwise 'done it better'. Note that they take that same idea, and then satirize themselves for SR3, and then satirize SR3 for 4 so you end up doing absolutely inane/insane/hilarious/disgusting/raunchy/silly/cringey/problematic shit "just for laughs". It ends up being a whole lot of awkward, crass/vulgar jokes, and seemingly hyperviolence for violence's sake.

It'd be like watching a movie like 'Scary Movie', except you don't realize it's a comedy, because you never saw any of the movies/pop culture references/etc that they happen to be riffing off of. If you never played GTA or similar games 'back then', 99% of the comedic beats don't ever land, and you're stuck with a mid-tier open world crimegame. I think the big gimmick of SR2 is that you really have to take it as a sort of satirical callout on GTA (and related games). Saints Row the Third onward is where they started understanding the world. But they were kind like painting what you see in the world.
And especially the kind of meta-commentary about the historical formation of cities, nations, and empires, and even religions as creations of people with the sharpest sticks. I have nothing but respect for that subversion of the expected boundaries of what is a viable story.
Satirising other video game narratives along the way. Not only that but they ascended that narrative all the way to deities. Imagine them sitting down in the writers room and saying how do we do what we did in the last two stories again? Maybe we'll pick a new underdog. It's up there with shows like Twin Peaks in terms of fucking with the audience. What Saints Row 3 onward did was beautiful. Kind of like you see with Rockstars approach to the GTA games where it's the same ascent story but with a new cast. If you were to continue the universe without subverting the trope of hierarchy ascent you'd just be playing the same games as 1 and 2 but with new characters rising from the bottom or maybe playing as the boot instead of the head. Saints Row 3 and 4 were just the logical extension of the formula to me. GTA 3, VC, SA, the original PC port of Resident Evil 4 before Steam, and Saints Row 2, which I could have fall in love with, but I guess I'll never know. It's really funny how some of the games I love the most all get treated like shit on PC. During my time, I managed to get a glimpse of the game being the true spiritual successor to GTA SA, my second favorite game of all time. The only way that I think I can play on PC is if I use Xenia or RPCS3, but my computer isn't strong enough for that, so I'm stuck with the PC port. I couldn't take it anymore, and just uninstalled the game. I'm driving around, enjoying the radio stations, crashed. I was just enjoying the game, halfway through a mission, then crashed. Severe frame drops, crashes during missions, and low quality radio sound all ruin the experience for me. The old /r/patientgamers Essential Games ListĮven with the GOTR patch, the game is still a miserable experience.
